Overview
Serengeti National Park is a world-renowned wildlife sanctuary located in northern Tanzania, celebrated for its vast savannahs, rich ecosystems, and unmatched wildlife viewing opportunities. Spanning approximately 14,750 square kilometers, the park is home to the famous Great Wildebeest Migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles journey across the plains in search of fresh grazing—an awe-inspiring spectacle of nature.
Beyond the migration, Serengeti offers year-round game viewing with an abundance of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, and over 500 bird species. The park’s name, derived from the Maasai word “Siringet,” means “endless plains”—a fitting description of its breathtaking scenery that stretches as far as the eye can see.
Whether exploring on a game drive, floating above the plains in a hot air balloon, or walking with a guide through remote corners of the bush, Serengeti delivers a truly authentic and unforgettable African safari experience.
Popular and memorable activities to do in Serengeti National Park
Wildebeest Migrations
Depending on the season, you can see over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles on their epic journey—especially dramatic during river crossings in the northern Serengeti.
Hot Air Balloon Safari
Experience the Serengeti from above at sunrise. Float over the plains as wildlife roam below, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush.
Game Drive
The most iconic activity, game drives offer the chance to witness the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino) along with cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, and countless wildebeest. Drives can be done in the early morning, afternoon, or as full-day excursions.
Bird Watching
With over 500 bird species, Serengeti is a birder’s paradise. Look out for secretary birds, vultures, kori bustards, and colorful bee-eaters, especially around water sources and woodlands.
Walking Safari
Guided by armed rangers and expert naturalists, walking safaris allow you to explore the park on foot—learning about tracks, plants, and smaller creatures often missed during game drives.
Photography Safaris
With stunning landscapes, dramatic light, and abundant wildlife, Serengeti is perfect for both amateur and professional photographers. Some operators offer specialized photography vehicles and guides.

Best Time To Visit
The Best Time To See The Migration is from July to October. This is the dry season, and in June and July, the herds will be facing their biggest challenge: the Mara river crossing. If you are keen on seeing the predators in action, go in January or February, when there is a hiatus in the annual rains and the wildebeest calve.
Note that traveling in the peak seasons naturally comes with higher costs, and there’s a certain beauty about the country during or just after the rains.
