Kilimanjaro Food

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a physical and mental challenge—but with the right fuel, your body can thrive at altitude. One of the most common questions trekkers ask is, What kind of food will I eat on Kilimanjaro?”

At Asili Climbing Kilimanjaro, we believe good food is more than a necessity—it’s part of the experience. From fresh fruits at breakfast to warm soups in the evening, every meal is thoughtfully prepared to keep you energized, satisfied, and healthy throughout your climb.

Every trek with Asili includes a dedicated mountain chef and crew who prepare hot, hearty meals daily in a portable kitchen. We carry fresh ingredients and cook from scratch—no freeze-dried packets or canned surprises here.

You’ll be surprised how delicious mountain meals can be, even at 4,000 meters!

We focus on high-energy, nutritious, and easy-to-digest foods that help you cope with altitude and cold conditions. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll typically enjoy:

🌅 Breakfast

  • Porridge (maize, millet, oats)

  • Eggs (boiled, fried, or omelets)

  • Toast with jam, peanut butter, or honey

  • Pancakes or chapati (flatbread)

  • Fresh fruit (bananas, oranges, mango)

  • Hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot chocolate)

🥪 Lunch

Depending on the day’s schedule, lunch is either packed or served hot:

  • Sandwiches or grilled chicken

  • Boiled eggs

  • Fruit

  • Biscuits or snack bars

  • Juice or tea

Hot lunches (on shorter trekking days) may include:

  • Pasta with vegetables or meat sauce

  • Rice with beans or chicken

  • Stewed vegetables

🍲 Dinner

Served in a dining tent with a cozy atmosphere:

  • Soup (vegetable, leek, carrot, or pumpkin)

  • Rice, pasta, or potatoes

  • Grilled or stewed meat (chicken or beef)

  • Cooked vegetables (cabbage, spinach, carrots)

  • Chapati or bread rolls

  • Fresh fruit for dessert

  • Herbal tea or hot chocolate

Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific food allergies, we can cater to your dietary needs. Just let us know in advance, and our chefs will plan accordingly.

All meals are cooked hygienically and served with clean utensils and filtered water.

We provide safe, treated drinking water throughout your trek. Water is collected from nearby streams and boiled, filtered, or chemically treated for your safety.

You should bring reusable water bottles or a hydration bladder to refill daily.

At high altitude, your immune system weakens slightly, so food safety is critical. Our team follows strict hygiene protocols, including:

  • Washing hands and equipment thoroughly

  • Preparing meals in a dedicated clean kitchen tent

  • Ensuring ingredients are fresh and stored safely

  • Avoiding cross-contamination

While we provide three full meals per day, you may want to bring your own snacks for extra energy between meals:

  • Energy bars or protein bars

  • Dried fruit

  • Trail mix or nuts

  • Electrolyte tablets or powders

  • Hard candy or chocolate for quick sugar boosts

Tip: Altitude may reduce your appetite, so bring snacks you know you love—even if they seem basic at sea level.

Climbing Kilimanjaro requires more than stamina—it requires proper nourishment. High-carb, low-fat meals help your body adapt to lower oxygen levels. Warm soups and teas also help keep you hydrated and combat altitude-related symptoms like headaches or nausea.

You’re pushing your body every day on Kilimanjaro, and what you eat directly affects your performance, mood, and success.

At Asili Climbing Kilimanjaro, we take food seriously—because your summit depends on it.
