Getting To Kilimanjaro

Before you begin your trek to the Roof of Africa, you first need to get there—and understanding how to reach Mount Kilimanjaro is an important part of your planning. Whether you’re coming from the U.S., Europe, Asia, or anywhere else in the world, this guide will help you navigate the journey smoothly.

Here’s everything you need to know about getting to Mount Kilimanjaro.

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. The closest major town is Moshi, with Arusha as another nearby base, especially if you’re combining your climb with a safari. Most treks start with a transfer from one of these towns to the mountain’s various gates.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

This is the main airport for climbers. Located about halfway between Arusha and Moshi, JRO is just a 45–60-minute drive from both towns.

  • IATA code: JRO

  • Full name: Kilimanjaro International Airport

  • Transfers: Most tour operators offer airport pickups

Direct Flights to JRO

You can fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport from major cities such as:

  • Amsterdam (KLM Royal Dutch Airlines)

  • Doha (Qatar Airways)

  • Istanbul (Turkish Airlines)

  • Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines)

  • Nairobi (Kenya Airways)

  • Dar es Salaam (local connections)

If you’re flying from the USA, UK, Canada, or Australia, you’ll usually have a layover in Europe or the Middle East before arriving in Tanzania.

If flights to JRO are limited or expensive, here are two alternatives:

1. Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR)Dar es Salaam

  • Tanzania’s largest international airport

  • Requires a domestic flight to Kilimanjaro or a 10+ hour drive

  • Domestic airlines: Air Tanzania, Precision Air, and Coastal Aviation

2. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO)Nairobi, Kenya

  • A common hub with more international flights

  • Take a short connecting flight to JRO (1 hr) or drive via border crossing (note visa requirements)

  • Flying is recommended over land travel for time and convenience

If you’re already in East Africa, you can reach Kilimanjaro via:

  • Bus or shuttle from Nairobi to Arusha or Moshi (approx. 6–8 hours)

  • Private transfers or taxis arranged through your trekking company

  • Note: A Yellow Fever certificate may be required if transiting through Kenya

Most travelers will need a tourist visa to enter Tanzania.

  • Cost: $50 USD (or $100 for U.S. citizens)

  • Where to get it: Apply online via Tanzania eVisa portal or get it on arrival at JRO

  • Passport validity: Minimum 6 months from entry date

Before you take off, make sure you’ve got:

✔️ Valid passport and visa
✔️ Yellow Fever certificate (if required)
✔️ Travel insurance (including evacuation coverage)
✔️ International flights booked to JRO (or connecting flights)
✔️ Airport transfer arranged with your Kilimanjaro operator
✔️ Arrival day buffer (arrive at least 1 day before your climb)

Most climbers stay in Moshi or Arusha the night before their trek begins. Both towns offer:

  • Comfortable hotels and lodges

  • Gear rental shops

  • Last-minute shopping (snacks, SIM cards, etc.)

  • Cultural activities and coffee tours

Tip: Arrive at least a full day early to rest, meet your guides, and get a final gear check before the trek.
